Samsung Breaks $1,000 3D Barrier with 50-inch Plasma

samsung 3dtv 300 C.I.S. Charlotte NC Available for Preorder

Custom Installation Services is Charlotte, NC's #1 Authorized Samsung Retailer!

A 50-inch 3D-ready plasma will ship from Amazon for less than $1,000. Who says 3D TV is expensive?

Besides the lack of content, the other major hurdle that’s preventing 3D video from mass adoption has been the high prices of the displays.

Samsung is going to break the high-price ceiling of the format when it begins shipping a 3D television for less than $1,000.

Samsung will introduce a $989 50-inch 3D-ready high-definition television (HDTV) that consumers can already pre-order.

The Samsung PN50C490 is expected to have a resolution of 1365 x 768, and three HDMI v1.4 inputs, a single USB port, two component video inputs with left/right analog audio and a shared composite/PC (RGB) and PC audio/RF input.

The one caveat with the Energy Star-certified 3D television is that there are no active-shutter glasses included with it. With an average price of approximately $150 per set, a family of four should expect the additional cost of entry into the world of 3D to rise by about $600 before the purchase of a 3D-capable Blu-ray player.

That’s still a relative bargain.

Marantz Intros 3D-ready Universal Blu-ray Players

The Marantz UD5005 is now available at C.I.S.!

C.I.S. is Charlotte NC's First Choice For Sales & Installation of Quality Electronics From Marantz

The UD5005 and UD7005 players offer universal compatibility to play CDs, DVDs, DVD-Audio (DVD-A), Super Audio CD (SACDs) and Blu-ray discs.

With a history of building some of the best gear in consumer electronics, Marantz America is entering a new product category with the announcement of its new 3D-ready Blu-ray players.

The newly introduced UD5005 and UD7005 will replace the existing BD5004 and BD7004 disc players and they will be available in August and September for $500 and $900, respectively.

Marantz says the players offer universal compatibility with the ability to play CDs, DVDs, DVD-Audio (DVD-A), Super Audio CD (SACDs) and Blu-ray discs.

The network friendly Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) 1.5-certified universal disc players are also labeled “future-ready” by the company because their upgradeability, which is highlighted by its support of 3D Blu-ray disc playback.

Kevin Zarow, vice president of sales and marketing for Marantz America, says the players offer home theater enthusiasts the ability to tie together today’s variety of media through the use of a single component.

“Our new UD7005 and UD5005 Universal Media Players are literally ‘game changers’ in the source component marketplace,” says Zarow.

“Both units are much more than simply advanced Blu-ray players. They are 100 percent future-ready media players that offer today’s discriminating consumers an affordable way to take advantage of all today’s most advanced high-performance content sources. In addition to supporting HDMI 1.4 and 3D capability, they will play virtually any 12-cm digital audio or digital video disc ever created, and provide maximum audio and video enjoyment.”

Technically, the players support the media playback through the use of 24- and 32-bit digital-to-analog (DACs) converters, HDMI 1.4a digital outputs and legacy electronics support with multichannel analog outputs.

In addition to these features, the players also offer Netflix and YouTube streaming, and appealing industrial designs developed in-house by the company.Marantz UD5005 available at C.I.S. Charlotte!

HD Guru: Bad Grades for DirecTV 3D

C.I.S. - Charlotte NC's Trusted Home Theater Experts!

C.I.S. - Charlotte NC's Trusted Home Theater Experts!

HD Guru Gary Merson scores 3D content on DirecTV and the results are generally grim: “Take it off the air.”

Last week, DirecTV flipped the switch on a bunch of new 3D channels. It’s been a long time coming, but was it all worth the wait?

HD Guru Gary Merson has posted his review on the service provider’s first four 3D offerings. He looked at some of the programming from the exclusive N3D channel, which is a joint effort between DirecTV and Panasonic. Some of the content features the awesome power of 1080p/24. Don’t get too drooly, though; some of the content is in 1080i.

So what’s the verdict? Well, you might still be anxiously awaiting new content. Programs reviewed included:

* Wild Safari: An South African Adventure
* S.O.S Planet
* African Adventure: Safari in the Okavango
* Encounter In The Third Dimension

Using a good, old grading system, Merson says the first three programs averaged about a C on content. That sounds kind of crappy, if you ask me. In other words, you’ll watch it because that’s all there is. Even more depressing is that two of those Cs scored even worse when it came to 3D quality—with one getting a big, fat F.

“Safari in Okavango is poorly shot 3D, making viewing a strain, as ones eyes try to compensate for the discrepancies,” Merson says. “At this time we feel it would be best for DirecTV to take it off the air and only rebroadcast it if it can fixed in post production.”

Tell us how you really feel, Gary! He definitely does. Check out his full review at HDGuru.com.
