5 Hot Technologies for 2010

168_hitech-home300Keep your eyes peeled for more home control iPhone apps, new cell phone functionality, and on-demand video.

Where is home technology headed? We saw some great innovations—many in the TV world—at the recent CES 2010 show.

We also talked to some of our friends who make a living as custom electronics professionals (CE pros) to get their take on what’s big for 2010. Systems that can help homeowners curb their energy use are hot; so are multiscreen video walls and housewide high-def. The popularity and use of these technologies are no where near pervasive, but we’ve certainly seen a paradigm shift as custom electronics professionals and consumers are beginning to include them in their home designs.

CE pros understand that importance of staying on the cutting edge. If they don’t, they risk losing customers. It’s their job to introduce homeowners to the latest and greatest in home technology. Even if you don’t latch on to some of their ideas now, you’ll at least be able to keep a pulse of where the industry is headed, and can add these devices and systems when you’re ready

Here’s where home technology is headed, according to a few reputable CE pros we asked:

More mobile control. Whether you’ve got an iPhone, BlackBerry, Droid or some other mobile device, you’ll be able to link to the systems in your house remotely through special programming (often free) downloadable applications.

Voice control. “The ability to ask a computer or system to play a song or pull up a bit of information seemed far fetched a while ago, but with Rhapsody, Hulu, YouTube, and Google, it seems only a matter of time before someone will be able to provide an interface that will able to support voice control,” says Brian Duggan of Union Place, Excelsior, Minn.

Video walls. Requests for video walls are increasing at Hi-Tech Home in Clovis, Calif., says company general manager Chris Green. “Whether it’s using six TVs that can be combined into one display or one large display that can be separated into four sections, a video wall is a lot of fun.”

Energy management. Technology is and will continue to be used increasingly as a way to conserve energy. Curtis LeMaster of Control Designer in Orlando, Fla., sees huge potential for LED lighting. “It’s going to have a big impact.”

Fiber optics. Entertainment is driven by content—both physical and downloadable. As the bandwidth requirements of this content increases, fiber optic cabling will become necessary, says LeMaster. “It is not well used in the residential market now, but this will change and change soon.”

ESPN Jumping into 3D

The ubiquitous sports network will become the first to have a 3D network, called ESPN 3D.

While it’s not debuting “ESPN Ocho” that popular online columnist Bill Simmons commonly refers to, ubiquitous sports franchise ESPN will be adding to its lineup the first 3D broadcast network, ESPN 3D, it reported today.

The programming will begin June 11 with the initial 2010 FIFA World Cup match between South Africa and Mexico, and continue with a minimum of 85 live sporting events in the first year, according to ESPN/ABC Sports president George Bodenheimer.

The company added that next year’s BCS National Championship Game (ABC took over coverage from Fox this season and will broadcast this week’s Texas-Alabama game), will be produced in 3D, as will particular college basketball and football games, World Cup and Summer X Games.

ESPN has been dabbling in 3D for over two years, the company said, including a USC-Ohio State broadcast shown in movie theaters and at USC’s Galen Center.

We’ve seen a handful of other sporting events recently hit the 3D realm, including NBA All-Star festivities, last year’s BCS championship and a Thursday night NFL game, to somewhat favorable reception.

Of course, those were also broadcast to commercial theaters. Will this be the crack that breaks in the dam to let in a floodgate of 3D to our TVs, which already appears to be steamrolling ahead and into the home?

Coolest Products and Tech of the Decade

pioneer-plasma300

We take a look back at some influential A/V of the past decade.

Back in 2000, few people had high-definition televisions, DVD popularity began phasing out VHS, speedy broadband Internet wasn’t mainstream, and people had just started stocking up on MP3s (the majority illegally obtained).

Companies like TiVo and Netflix that would dramatically change people’s viewing habits were barely out of infancy.

Now we can watch just about anything we want, whenever we want, and almost wherever we want — on our TVs, computers, cell phones. And super-high quality TVs don’t cost a fortune either … far from it, even for sizes equivalent to the super-space-hogging rear-projection sets popularized in the 90s.

To go with higher-quality TVs we also have better looking video content, as Blu-ray (and HD DVD briefly) brought HD to disc form. Those Blu-ray players can even do much more than play Blu-ray discs as the decade comes to a close now too.

We also have higher-quality audio to complete the full home theater experience. Higher resolution of uncompressed soundtracks on disc, and expanded audio options that have come about with the rise of iPod and other mobile/computer-based listening.

So we’re taking a look back at some of our favorites from the decade. We’re not getting into the automation category (though you can use your iPhone to control some of that too), but there’s been plenty else to change the landscape of A/V and home theater.
