Will Hulu Start Charging You to View Content?

hulu-mosaic-webHulu experimenting with subscription-based content, according to NBC Universal exec.

The success of Hulu has largely stemmed from being able to watch your favorite shows anywhere, anytime … for free.

However, it appears free content is not for long on the popular video-viewing site.

According to NBC Universal TV chief Marc Graboff, Hulu is experimenting with different business models, including subscription-based content “to turn those digital pennies into digital dollars.”

Hulu is jointly owned by General Electric Co’s NBC Universal, News Corp’s Fox Entertainment and Walt Disney Co’s ABC.

“I know [Hulu is] looking at any number of things,” Graboff adds, “like adding inventory (more advertising) or creating a subscription model with different windows.”

And by windows, Graboff means limited content availability. The specifics are not clear yet on what content could be subscription-based and what could be available to the masses.

But we do know not many (if any) outlets have been successful, yet, charging its users to view content.

Analyst: ‘Game Over’ for Microsoft in Consumer Space
Failure in the mobile realm, and the lack of integrated user interfaces for applications and services, will help Microsoft lose its grip on consumers in 2010.
Microsoft will suffer in the consumer space, according to Mark Anderson, author of the Strategic News Service newsletter, and an influential technology watcher.

In his annual Top 10 list of technology predictions, Anderson proclaims 2010 the year that Microsoft “loses” in the consumer space:
Microsoft loses in its Consumer play: except for gaming, it is Game Over for MS in Consumer. This will make Consumer the place to be, where the most robust and exciting change artists will work.

Anderson believes that Microsoft’s vision of integrating front-end platforms with a strong back-end platform “isn’t resonating,” reports ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley, who attended Anderson’s Top 10 affair:
Instead, customers are more interested in the fully-integrated user interfaces (with apps, marketplaces and the like) with an OK, but not great, back-end integration story. Apple, Android and others are better positioned here and going to win, Anderson told dinner participants ….

We wondered earlier why Microsoft has not created something as fundamental as a marketplace for apps and services, especially for Media Center – a job now being undertaken by a couple of fans in their free time.

Anderson believes that Microsoft’s failure in the mobile category will further alienate consumers from the software company’s ecosystem.

He says Windows 7, “ironically, by failure of imagination and by its PC-centric platform, actively clears space for others to take over the OS via mobile platforms.”
