Netflix 1080p Timeline: When Will it Come to CE Devices?

The existing universe of 1080P Netflix devices includes the Sony Playstation3, Roku 2 XS and XD, WD TV Live and now LG 2011 Smart TVs and Samsung Smart Hub enabled devices, according to Tech of the Hub.

Netflix launched 1080p streaming in 2010, but we’ve barely seen it in smart TVs, networked Blu-ray players and other common CE devices from top brands such as Samsung, LG and Tivo.

Netflix 1080p was supported exclusively by the Playstation 3 when it launched last year, and since then has trickled out to media players from Roku and Western Digital. Netflix only this summer released a software developers kit for everyone else, and those everyone elses are finally incorporating the technology into their new and legacy devices (via firmware upgrade).

That’s good news for Netflix Watch Instantly lovers, but might be confusing as well.

As Tech of the Hub suggests:

The toughest part for the consumer is distinguishing the differences between all of the Netflix enabled TVs, Blu-ray players and streaming boxes at retail stores. All of them have the same Netflix logo on them. So, you can’t tell which Netflix boxes support 1080P, surround sound and subtitles.

The blog site has reached out to several major brands to determine when they will enable 1080p Netflix streaming for their CE devices.

Here is an overview, but check out Tech of the Hub for more details.

Samsung updated its Netflix app two weeks ago for Smart Hub-enabled Blu-ray players, TVs and home theater systems.

LG displays with Smart TV have been updated as well, with other LG devices following this month.

Netgear’s new NeoTV NTV-200 will support Netflix 1080p next year.

Pioneer’s Blu-ray players will not support 1080p for Netflix.

TiVo is working on 1080p Netflix streaming, but won’t say when it will be commercially available.

The big question is: Will Netflix raise its rates again when 1080p becomes universally available?!

Top 10 Blu-ray Releases for December 15

hangover300‘Boogie Nights,’ Tarantino’s ‘Basterds’ and ‘The Hangover’ highlight this week’s selections.

This week’s batch of Blu-ray releases offer quality over quantity. Unlike some weeks, there aren’t a big slew of choices. But there are several solid picks to make for some worthwhile viewing.

It’s always noteworthy when Quentin Tarantino makes a film, and while ‘Inglourious Basterds’ is certainly no ‘Pulp Fiction’ it does have its share of entertaining moments and the usual eyebrow-raising storytelling that the director has become known for. Plus Brad Pitt offers up another quality performance, as does Christoph Waltz as the movie’s main villain.

Coming off the heels of Tarantino’s success in the mid-90s, Paul Thomas Anderson began delivering equally entertaining epics. His breakthrough film ‘Boogie Nights’ hits Blu-ray this week, with its fast-paced look at the porn industry of the 70s and 80s. Should be a winner for your sound system, too, with a classic 70s soundtrack setting the tone for the movie.

If you’re looking for something a little lighter, or a lot lighter, check out ‘The Hangover,’ which could make a strong case as funniest movie of the year. And if that’s not enough humor for you, there’s an enormous Mel Brooks Collection due out this week that ought to keep you laughing for days featuring nine movies.

Here is the full release schedule for the week, courtesy of Blu-ray.com (movie synopses and information also courtesy of their website):

Will Hulu Start Charging You to View Content?

hulu-mosaic-webHulu experimenting with subscription-based content, according to NBC Universal exec.

The success of Hulu has largely stemmed from being able to watch your favorite shows anywhere, anytime … for free.

However, it appears free content is not for long on the popular video-viewing site.

According to NBC Universal TV chief Marc Graboff, Hulu is experimenting with different business models, including subscription-based content “to turn those digital pennies into digital dollars.”

Hulu is jointly owned by General Electric Co’s NBC Universal, News Corp’s Fox Entertainment and Walt Disney Co’s ABC.

“I know [Hulu is] looking at any number of things,” Graboff adds, “like adding inventory (more advertising) or creating a subscription model with different windows.”

And by windows, Graboff means limited content availability. The specifics are not clear yet on what content could be subscription-based and what could be available to the masses.

But we do know not many (if any) outlets have been successful, yet, charging its users to view content.
