ZVOX Wants to See Your TV Wire Mess

C.I.S.: We Also Specialize In Fixing Other A/V Companies' Mistakes!

C.I.S.: We Also Specialize In Fixing Other A/V Companies' Mistakes!

The company is holding a contest asking ‘How ugly is the back of your TV’ and has a soundbar ready to give the winner.

We hope your TV isn’t ugly, but if it is, ZVOX want to know about it.

More specifically, the manufacturer of the Z-Base 550 home theater system is looking for setups with the biggest mess of wires in the back of the TV.

“TV wire hairballs are a growing problem in our society,” says ZVOX founder Tom Hannaher. “It started out 30 years ago with a simple VCR hookup, but now there are cable boxes, Xboxes, Blu-ray players and multi-speaker surround-sound systems. It’s a real mess.”

Email your entry photographs to info@zvoxaudio.com with “Ugly TV Contest” as the subject line in the email, and you could wind up winning a Z-Base 550. Entries must be received by no later than April 30, 2010.

After you snap a few pictures, use the following tips to beautify your big-screen.
—Cable covers. Hide the cabling inside a plastic tube. A number of companies offer inexpensive plastic enclosures for cabling. Styles in include tubes, channels that attach to the wall and units that resemble baseboards.
—Furniture. Replace your entertainment cabinet or stand with a unit that features an internal cable management system where the wiring can be routed inside the hollow legs of the stand, for example.
—Equipment closet. The more equipment you keep with your TV, the more cabling there is. You can cut down on the cabling in your living room by locating the Blu-ray player, A/V receiver, cable box and other components in closet.

ViewSonic Adds Glasses to Go with Its 3D Projection

CIS - Charlotte & Asheville NC's #1 Choice For 3D Media Room Design!

CIS - Charlotte & Asheville NC's #1 Choice For 3D Media Room Design!

The company has introduced its $99 PGD-150 active shutter 3D glasses

Those 3D glasses aren’t going away, so you might as well find a pair that doesn’t make you look too geeky. Good thing the new PGD-150 from ViewSonic appears to be pretty sleek, and even comes with three sizes of custom interchangeable nose pieces so it’s stays comfy with all that 3D viewing you’re going to be engaging in soon.

For one thing, ViewSonic says it made the PGD-150 Active Stereographic 3D shutter glasses with an education setting in mind, so it says the product is “designed for heavy classroom usage and easy cleaning.”

That’s a nice perk, but we’ll be especially interested in how the frames do with home theater viewing when mated to ViewSonic’s own DLP Link 120Hz/3D Ready projectors, especially as more 3D TV and Blu-ray content is introduced.

The company says the glasses are good for viewing at up to 50 feet, which ought to make theater viewing from 10 to 15 feet away pretty darn sharp through the PGD-150’s TN Type LCD shutter and 1,000:1 contrast.

Batteries are included, and expected battery life for the glasses is 70 hours before needing replacement. Also, the build quality features a plastic, dust-proof design, ViewSonic adds, which should guard against the worst your old sofas or theater chairs manage to kick up.

The glasses are out now, with an estimated street price of $99.

Polk Provides Surround Effects Wirelessly

C.I.S. : #1 Polk Audio Speaker Dealer in the Carolina's!

C.I.S. - Charlotte NC's #1 Polk Audio Speaker Dealer!

The Wireless Surround F/X speaker from Polk Audio offers a versatile alternative to traditional rear speakers.

While companies such as Micromega raised eyebrows on the electronics side of wireless audio at CES 2010, several companies were making sweet music to the ears of those who want to reduce cable clutter of a surround-sound system.

Polk Audio was one of those, as the company used an engaging demonstration of an “August Rush” Blu-ray in conjunction with Polk’s sound system comprising one of its SurroundBar units for the front channels and its new Wireless Surround F/X for those surround effects. I took a seat on the couch of Polk’s Venetian Hotel demo room to hear it for myself.

The Blu-ray clip was a scene filled with street noises whirring from everywhere, making great use of all channels in the system. Director of sales Dan Wakefield had a good time noting the looks on visitors’ faces as they began looking around for what presumably was a set of wall- or ceiling-mounted rear speakers.

To everyone’s surprise, they would be directed to look down at the floor, behind the couch that served as the listening sweet spot. That’s where the compact Wireless Surround F/X speaker sat unassumingly. About the size of a small dipole surround speaker, the Polk product features four 2.5-inch full-range drivers and a 5.25-inch woofer, powered by a small multichannel DSP amplifier.

I knew where the unit was placed, but my ears were just as pleasantly fooled while I lounged during “August Rush.” As Wakefield promised, the surround effects seem to arrive from about head level as well as from both left and right despite coming out of a single box. Between the soundbar and the wireless speaker, the combination proved quite effective at filling the room with surround sound.

A three-position DSP control helps optimize the audio image for floor, table and shelf applications, Polk says, opening versatile placement options for installers and homeowners. Look for Wireless Surround F/X in Q2 of this year for $399.
