Universal Remote Control Updates CCP Software

urc_complete_control_progra11.20.2009 — Universal Remote Control (URC) has released the latest Live Update for its Complete Control Program (CCP), which it also formally introduced.

The CCP software allows authorized dealers to program all URC remotes with just this one program.

Here are the features added via the Live Update:
Web browsing for the MX-6000 two-way color touch screen
Eleven models have been added to the IP-controllable Audio/Video devices for Volume Pop-Up.

CCP’s IR database has been updated to include new Marantz and Onkyo receivers.

More than 300 models have been added to CCP’s RS-232 serial database
User Guides have been added to the CCP Help section for the AVR two-way modules and the Web browser.

The update also adds two-way modules for the MX-5000 and the MX-6000 that support IP-controlled A/V receivers from Denon, Integra, Onkyo, B&K and Yamaha. Some of these include AM/FM/HD tuner modules that display frequencies, station names, HD metadata, presets and favorite stations, and XM and Sirius modules that display all song, artist and title metadata.

The CCP software is written to be intuitive for users and employs concepts in which remotes are programmed room by room with the ability to “undo,” “redo,” “mirror” and “copy” various functions across remote product platforms.

Older programs can also be opened in CCP and other features are automatically loaded with URC’s Live Update feature.

Inside SpeakerCraft’s Booth at CEDIA Expo 2009

speakercraftbooth_300SpeakerCraft’s CEDIA Expo 2009 booth couldn’t be more different than its 2008 Expo booth.

Last year the company de-emphasized products and played up business — albeit in the context of watching scantily clad dancers.

“We’re displaying almost all of our products [this year],” says Dave Donald, VP of marketing. The shift in focus is “sort of a yin and yang thing.”

“We did our business message last year. And we took it out on the road all year. This year, we’re back to products.”

Among the products SpeakerCraft is showing in booth 2418 are its Nirv multiroom audio system, which president Jeremy Burkhardt teased as “the largest product introduction ever.”

SpeakerCraft also is showing its first-ever receivers that are part of the new Vital line.

SpeakerCraft’s booth, of course, isn’t without its flare. The large “Burning Man”-esque tents seem to attract installers — hence the relatively big crowds.

We were wondering if SpeakerCraft’s always-interesting booth would emphasis “Nirv or Nudity.” The answer is Nirv.

Samsung Tops Vizio as LCD TV Leader in Q3 2009

isuppli_lcd11.17.2009 — For the first time since the fourth quarter of 2008, Samsung is ranked No. 1 in the LCD TV market, according to iSuppli.

Samsung shipped 1.3 million LCDs in the United States in the third quarter of 2009 (July-Sept.) for a 16.8 percent share of the market.

Samsung holds a 1.1 percentage point lead over Vizio, which sold 1.2 million LCDs for a 15.7 percent share of the market. Vizio was the top brand for the first two quarters of 2009.

“Samsung is leading the LCD-TV industry’s adoption of LED backlighting technology,” says iSuppli principal analyst of TV systems Riddhi Patel. “The company has been marketing these sets intensely, attracting the interest of U.S. consumers.

“Consumers like LED-backlit LCD-TVs because of their ultra-thin form factors. With Samsung cutting the prices of these sets aggressively, they now are becoming increasingly affordable for a larger number of U.S. consumers.”

Overall, 7.9 million LCDs shipped in the quarter, up 8.3 percent from 7.3 million in the second quarter. According to iSuppli, Vizio remains the cumulative leader in LCD shipments for 2009.

LED-backlit TVs made up 3.7 percent of total LCD shipments in the U.S., according to iSuppli, which is up from 2.1 percent in the second quarter. Samsung began selling a 55-inch LED LCD in October for $2,650, while Vizio added 19- ($349.99) and 23-inch ($399.99) LED LCDs.

Patel adds, “This low price point and minimal gap with CCFL sets represents a critical price threshold for LED-backlit sets, making them more acceptable to U.S. consumers.”
